The effects of Xanax abuse go far beyond the symptoms the drug creates. The real effects of Xanax abuse are seen in what it does to an addict’s life, mind and relationships. Since Xanax—including its generic form, alprazolam—is the most widely prescribed of the benzodiazepines, it is also the most widely abused of these drugs. And there are hundreds of thousands of people who are suffering the effects of Xanax abuse. Between 20, the number of people who visited emergency rooms who were suffering from the effects of Xanax increased from 46,000 to nearly 125,000. These statistics also show how common it is to mix Xanax abuse with the use of other drugs. The Drug Awareness Warning Network notes that more than 96,000 of these people had used more than one drug, usually alcohol, opiates, marijuana or cocaine. While many people who are dependent on Xanax started taking it in small doses, like heroin or cocaine users, they often begin taking more and more and start craving the drug when the effects of the drug begin to lessen – which can happen in a relatively short time after beginning to take the drug. Benzodiazepines (“benzos”) are drugs that were first marketed in the 1960’s for the treatment of insomnia, anxiety, seizures, convulsions and as muscle relaxants. Today these drugs account for about one out of every five prescriptions for controlled substances. Benzos like Pro Som, Dalmane, Doral, Restoril and Halcion are often prescribed for insomnia. I have been to every dr and emergency room late at night, sick to my stomach, my chest feeling heavy and my head heavy and fuzzy, can't focus, dizzy, hot, tingling feeling numbness my face, my lips, my arms and everyone says it's anxiety or a panic attack. I feel so alone in this and I'm scared that there is something really wrong with me and the dr's are just not finding it. They are great for the occasional anxiety as they work fast. I feel hopeless I hope the xanax will help do something. But the half life is so very very short that you can easily start going into withdrawals after a few days. I can't function in society and I'm tired of faking that I'm ok when I'm dying inside does anyone else feel like this or am I just crazy.""I've had severe anxiety all of my life manifesting in different forms. I have been so scared to take it due to the fact I have taken stuff as a teen that made me feel really out of it and depressed. I'm 31 years old got married in June to a man who doesn't believe in anxiety so it makes me feel worse. Good Luck.""Hey there I'm new to taking xanax and to this site. The stigma of this drug caused me to avoid it for about 15 years. If I was prescribed it I flushed it down the toilet. I FINALLY took one when I was so desperate I didn’t have any other choice. People take all kinds of medication for all kinds of other diseases. Anxiety and depression are a disease just the same as anything else. It’s a shame that we are made to feel like we’re doing something wrong for using Xanax.
