    Does plaquenil affect the kidneys

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Aug 14, 2017 Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. The New Zealand Dermatological Society recommends that to decrease the risk of retina damage, no more than 200mg of Plaquenil should be taken a day, and a dose of 400mg per day should be taken no longer than a few weeks. Whenever I would have a flare before Plaquenil, I would have extreme pain in my kidneys, along with gastric issues and chest inflammation. Now my flares are much lighter, they don’t affect my kidneys as much, and they don’t disable me as much as they used to. I can still function somewhat regularly, even if I’m not feeling great. The usual starting dose of Plaquenil is 200 mg twice a day or 400 mg once a day, administered orally, in people weighing 80 kg or more. The usual dosage works for most people who take Plaquenil, but it is possible to increase or decrease the dose based on individual needs. It's important to watch for possible side effects and toxicity.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

Aug 26, 2016 Yes, plaquenil is difficult to adjust first, but after the first year of treatment and side effects, the benefits outweigh the problems. So, stick with it. In my opinion, the plaque nil is keeping the immune system regulated and the pain and other symptoms described will reduce.
