    Chloroquine treatment in pregnancy

Chloroquine has been extensively used in mass drug administrations, which may have contributed to the emergence and spread of resistance. It is recommended to check if chloroquine is still effective in the region prior to using it.

Dec 16, 2008 In the high malaria-transmission settings of sub-Saharan Africa, malaria in pregnancy is an important cause of maternal, perinatal and neonatal morbidity. Intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy IPTp with sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine SP reduces the incidence of low birth-weight, pre-term delivery, intrauterine growth-retardation and maternal anaemia. Summary. Aralen is the brand name for the generic drug chloroquine, an anti-malaria drug used to treat malaria and amebiasis infection that's spread outside of the intestines. Dosage, drug interactions, and pregnancy and breastfeeding safety information should be reviewed prior to taking this drug. Chloroquine use in pregnancy has not been shown to cause a baby to be born early in any of the four studies that have investigated this. Studies have, however, shown that preterm birth is more common in pregnant women with malaria infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.

Chloroquine may be used throughout pregnancy for the prophylaxis and treatment of malaria. If chloroquine resistance of the parasite is likely or has been demonstrated, other drugs must be used. We postulated that intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy with chloroquine or weekly chloroquine chemoprophylaxis would be superior to intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine in preventing placental malaria infection and the maternal and newborn adverse effects of pregnancy-associated malaria. Medications that can be used for the treatment of malaria in pregnancy include chloroquine, quinine, atovaquone-proguanil, clindamycin, mefloquine avoid in first trimester, sulfadoxine.
